April Brews Day

This event sells out each year and is an excellent opportunity for businesses to join in the fun and festivities to receive excellent exposure and promotion.

Max Higbee Center is a grassroots organization founded by educators and families of people with developmental disabilities who wanted quality recreation opportunities in Whatcom County. Ranger Doug Leen found his first silk-screen print of an original Works Progress Administration Grand Teton National Park poster in the early ’70s, and he’s been collecting, studying, and reproducing these posters ever since. The WPA’s Federal Art Project printed more than two million posters between 1935 and 1943, but only 2,000 are known to have survived. Come meet Ranger Doug in the Whatcom Museum’s Old City Hall rotunda on May 3 and hear more about these much-loved and instantly recognizable works of art he has collected and preserved for half a century. This talk is part of the museum’s Free First Friday program and is free to attend.

If you like, you may bring your copy of Ranger Doug’s new coffee table book (or purchase one at the museum) for him to sign. Each book includes copies of 14 historic prints as well as a miniature silk-screen print of the Grand Teton poster he found so long ago. The museum will also be hosting a pop-up shop in Old City Hall with other Ranger Doug items for sale.

The People's Joker

8:30 PM20:30

The People's Joker

This revolutionary DIY parody film and hilarious reimagining of the classic autobiographical coming-of-age story follows an unconfident, closeted trans girl as she moves to Gotham City to make it big as a comedian by joining the cast of UCB Live - a government-sanctioned late night sketch show in a world where comedy has been outlawed. As mainstream success eludes our heroine, leading her to unite with a ragtag team of rejects, misfits, and a certain love interest named Mister J, "Joker the Harlequin" is born again as a confident (and psychotic) joker on a collision course with the city's fascist caped crusader. Vats of feminizing chemicals, sexy cartoon interludes, scarecrow psychiatrists, CGI Lorne Michaels, and psychedelic gender dysphoria all play supporting roles. Helmed by writer/director/editor/star Vera Drew and using her own life experiences as a basis for the film, THE PEOPLE'S JOKER is a deeply personal journey that's as much documentary as it is parody.

THE PEOPLE’S JOKER features a superhero-sized cast of celebrated comedic talent in both voice and live action roles behind the vibrant kaleidoscope of characters that lampoon the iconic heroes and villains of the DC comics’ world, featuring cameos from comedy multi-hyphenate Tim Heidecker, award-winning actor Bob Odenkirk, Maria Bamford (Netflix’s Big Mouth, Adult Swim’s Teenage Euthanasia), and Scott Aukerman (Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis co-creator and host of the Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast), with Vera Drew, Lynn Downey (Amazon Prime Video’s Daisy Jones & The Six), Nathan Faustyn (SADDLED), and Kane Distler, in his film debut as Mister J.

The lush soundscapes of this concert will sweep you away onto an unexpected journey. Each piece features unusual, but glorious instrument combinations starting with the Debussy “Sonata for flute, viola and harp”. Debussy once remarked that he didn’t recognize the writing and felt that it was reflective of his younger self. Meyerbeer’s “Quintet in Eb for Clarinet and Strings” is an equally intense soundscape featuring a deeply heartfelt and virtuosic display. The final soundscape will be Mendelssohn’s iconic “Octet in Eb” which was written when he was only 16 years old and shows of his youthful verve.

National Geographic Live: Social By Nature with Ronan Donovan

What’s a human? We are, at our core, social mammals. We build relationships, communicate, reproduce, establish territories, and adapt to shrinking resources. In these ways, we’re no different than other social mammals. Chimpanzees, wolves, and gorillas are among the most charismatic of the mammals we know. We identify with them as species, groups, and even as named individuals. They’re also under threat. Join acclaimed wildlife photographer Ronan Donovan for an evening as he talks about his work documenting these animals and what we, as fellow social mammals, can learn from them. Tickets on sale now!

The Whatcom Museum is proud to host National Geographic Explorer Ronan Donovan at the Mount Baker Theatre. His photography is also on exhibition in National Geographic’s Greatest Wildlife Photographs, on view at the museum March 9 – September 8, 2024.

“Stuffed” Film Viewing and Taxidermy Q&A

Join taxidermy world title holder and museum preservationist Allis Markham, owner of LA’s Prey Taxidermy, for a weekend of events at the Whatcom Museum.

On Friday, May 31, the museum is hosting a viewing of the film “Stuffed,” which premiered to acclaim at SXSW in Austin. It features Allis and documents the often-surprising and always-unique world of taxidermy through the eyes of the newest generation of artists and naturalists. The film allows the audience to dip into and explore a diverse subculture, where sculptors must also be scientists. It is a genre of art formed by a collection of people who have a fanaticism for nature, matched only by their desire to protect it.

Allis will join us for the viewing, answer questions, and show us a sampling of taxidermy specimens.

Then, on Saturday, June 1, join Allis and award-winning biologist & taxidermist Paloma Strong for Taxidermy Lab 101.

LIMITED AVAILABILITY

Welcome to Taxidermy Lab 101. This demonstration course will provide students with an on-site tutorial into the world of museum taxidermy. Students will work with acclaimed museum preservationists Allis Markham and Paloma Strong of Prey Taxidermy to discover how this ‘dead art’ is breathing life into conservation education. Classes at the Prey Taxidermy studio sell out quickly and require travel to Los Angeles, but for one weekend, Allis and Paloma will bring their expertise to Bellingham.

This is an introductory course where students will learn the basics of taxidermy through detailed presentations and demonstrations followed by a Q&A. This is not one of our hands-on workshops but is a demonstration and presentation course. While students will not participate or take home any pieces, they will be given a comprehensive overview of the craft of taxidermy. Students will also be sent a follow-up email with a PDF copy of the presentations and a list of resources discussed in the course. This is an excellent opportunity if you’ve ever wanted to learn taxidermy but didn’t know where to start, or if you’re exploring taxidermy already and have questions.

And don’t forget to join Allis and Paloma on Friday, May 31, for a viewing of the award-winning film “Stuffed,” followed by a Q&A.

The Shakedown Presents The Atom Age, Los Bongquistadors, True Stars

The Shakedown Presents The Atom Age, Los Bongquistadors, True Stars

  • 1212 North State Street Bellingham, WA, 98225 (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Having learned almost nothing from playing music for over a decade, The Atom Age convened once again in 23’ to lay down a new record. Their studio, District Recording, in the sleepy tech crusted Valley of Silicon provided the backdrop. The band opted to track live, using as little overdubbing and trickery as one can reasonably get away with. The resulting self-titled LP is from the gut, gloriously smart and stupid, while dropping all the sniffs and secret hints from missed decades past that could be mustered. It’s fun, clever, and at times dumb. Saxes screech, crappy organs wail, and vocals ruin already battered throats. It’s a wall of new and nothing new, all at the same time, poised to punch up your heartbeat and force you to come down from your daily dose of comatose.

Whatever strange powers determined their “Johnny Come Lately” fate are still benevolent enough to allow The Atom Age to take a small part in what they love. The group may never find their perfect place in time, but maybe that's the point. It’s why the struggles of making exciting Rock ‘N’ Roll possess them, and like the best stuff from days past, comes spit out as imperfect and as unpredictable as ever.

This exclusive event will shine a spotlight on five talented artists who have graced our podcast with their presence. Don't miss out on this electrifying evening celebrating the best of hip-hop talent!

fantompower is a producer and musician from Bellingham that is making waves with his unique yet palatable sound. On his latest album 'pure flaws' released in 2023, he demonstrates a distinctive blend of sounds, and enlists features from artists such as Erick the Architect and Reo Cragun.

Yonny is a 23 year old, up-and-coming trailblazer hailing from Seattle, Washington. His style could be described as a blend of conscious rap, soul burning melodies, and deep cutting vulnerability that keeps the listener always guessing what a new track from the artist will sound like. Influenced by a majority of west & east coast royalty ranging from Dr. Dre to Wu-Tang Clan, and even acts native to his hometown such as the Foo Fighters and Nirvana. As an avid fan of good music, there was no limit to the amount of inspiration he found around him.

Dsven

My name is DSVEN. I was born in Washington and raised in Arizona. I started making music in 2011 introduced to me by my step father. Rap Influences ranging from E-40 to Jay-z, and artistic influences from Kid Cudi and Childish Gambino. Many nights locked in to the home made studio helped me gain more confidence with my voice on the mic. My writing is something I hone in on creating vivid experiences for my listeners to see the world through my eyes. I connect with my audience on a personal level by being transparent about my traumas and adverse experiences, that have shaped me but not defined me, in my songs. With an electrifying show that is guaranteed to bring an everlasting memory my goal is to turn random bystanders into fans. I’m here to give you all my everything.

Shut Up and Listen is a WA podcast/blog, where hosts Chrvns and Morgan bring you the best of Whatcom County and North Puget Sound's music scene. From local talents to touring artists, they dive into upcoming projects, tour stories, and everything in between. Sponsored by Rocket Soul Studios and recorded at Binary Recording Studio, it's your go-to resource for all things music in the region. Tune in and shut up to discover the stories behind the music.

The Shakedown Presents Jonny West (from American Idol), with Savanna Woods

Storytelling has always been a deep rooted need of mine. Whether it’s listening or joining in. I think the ability to transport yourself to a different place , feeling , old memory , new memory that hasn’t happened yet, or all these combined with a simple story is very captivating and pure to me. It’s one of the oldest forms of entertainment we have. It can be internet-less.

Music has always been the vessel that I’ve gravitated toward as the medium to relay stories. It gives me that extra juice and the goosebumps on my neck when soul touching chords or Melodies mix with the love of storytelling. All I want is to give my stories and have fun constructing them in the vessel of this type of sound. The only thing better than the creation is sharing live with a crowd of people. Directing moments with an ensemble of listeners to feed off their feelings and oneness and create a one-off moment together is more fulfilling to me than anything I’ve experienced and feels like a called purpose. Maybe that’s the overly deep way of saying I love performing live, but there it is all the same. I hope anyone who can come to a show will feel that way and say I gave all. I believe in my songs and I’m excited for them to get stuck in some heads.

Folk Club at The Blue Room Featuring | Sweater Weather String Band, Andy Bunn

Sweater Weather String Band

With members drawn together from all across the Salish Sea by a mutual love of traditional music and knitwear, Sweater Weather String Band blends old-time, honky-tonk, Celtic, and indie rock influences into a style that has been likened to “the frolicking of sheep before a thunderstorm.” Formed from a series of jams and impromptu gigs, the band quickly developed a wildly danceable sound that’s been heard at festivals, folk dances, and bars throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Andy Bunn

Andy Bunn is a songwriter living in Bellingham WA who writes character-focused songs. Some of the stories in the songs stick mostly to the facts and some are tall tales. The characters in the stories feel real to him and that’s enough.

Folk Club shows happen on the first and third Sundays of every month and are all ages! Suggested donation $10-$20 - NOTAFLOF

The Blue Room Presents | Cozmic Sauce, The Outtatowners

The Blue Room Presents | Cozmic Sauce, The Outtatowners

Cozmic Sauce is a collaboration of seasoned musicians from around the globe, based in the Pacific NW, with a bright, modern, and unique sound.  It's a powerful, horn-driven, irresistibly danceable blend of funk and soul inspired grooves with sparkling vocals and compelling arrangements.

In 2017, the band's leader, bassist Steven Pearson, originally from London but now based near Bellingham, Washington, met drummer Jim Dunstone, also coincidentally a London native, and the Brit pair began assembling a group of accomplished musicians to perform music that nobody else around here is playing.

With up to five horns leading rousing instrumental numbers, mixed with tunes featuring the vocals of the phenomenally talented Carrie Bieber, the band throws down an exciting and diverse live show every time.

Drawing on modern funk and groove sounds from the likes of The New Mastersounds, Speedometer, The Bamboos, and Galactic, and weirdly influenced by 70s cop show theme music, the group has a growing following and a reputation for tight arrangements, quality musicianship, and high energy shows.

All the players in the group have broad stage experience, with various members having performed in bands with luminaries including soul queen Etta James, gigged with up and coming Seattle reggae artist Adrian Xavier, toured with reggae and rock steady giant Winston Jarrett, made multiple appearances at the internationally famous Burning Man event in Nevada, and have opened for the legendary BB King.  With performances at the wildly fun Strange BrewFest in Port Townsend, the prestigious Blaine Harbor Music Festival, and the Washington Brewers Festival at Seattle's Marymoor Park, the state's largest brewfest, Cozmic Sauce is gaining attention and gigs throughout the Northwest and beyond.

The OuttaTowners are a five-piece band blending jazz/rock/pop. Tyler Rogers, an accomplished saxophone player and endorsed artist in the Seattle-area brought together the following musicians: Savanna Woods, is an accomplished and highly sought after singer making appearances on season 20 of The Voice and securing a spot on Kelly Clarkson’s team. Luca Cartner, is an in-demand drummer around the greater Seattle-area playing with likes of the Delvon Lamar Organ Trio and other local favorites. Matthew Crissey, is a bass player and recording engineer who has worked and played on numerous projects around the Seattle-Tacoma area and got his training from the University of Washington. Jacob Martin, is a talented keyboard/piano player and composer writing and playing his compositions for multiple groups around the Seattle-area.

Zwanze Day 2024

The Great Northern Bottle Shop & Lounge is extremely honored and privileged to be selected as one of 84 locations in the world to receive a very unique beer from Brasserie Cantillon in Brussels, Belgium, which we'll all be tapping at the same time. Cantillon is renowned for its traditional production of spontaneously fermented lambic beer but for Zwanze Day each year, they put a somewhat nontraditional spin on things by incorporating an otherwise unusual ingredient into the mix. This year's ingredient: sea lettuce!

The sold-out, ticketed event is from 11-4pm. After 4pm we will be open to the public and welcome everyone over 21 to come by and get a taste (while supplies last) of not only the Zwanze beer but also any of the other special beers we have on tap for the event!
